BioSpace Releases Exclusive Hotbed Maps

BioSpace’s exclusive Hotbed Maps highlight nine different regions to watch across the U.S. This map, made in vibrant color for BioSpace showcases a one-of-a-kind glance at some of 2023’s headline-making companies.  

“We’re thrilled to roll out 2023’s exclusive Hotbed Map designs,” said Josh Goodwin, CEO of BioSpace. “These artistic renderings are a wonderful way for companies to highlight their brand within the industry to their employees, investors and onlookers. Goodwin said the maps are a powerful tool to give people a snapshot of who’s whom in the industry.

Biotech Bay 

The Biotech Bay Hotbed includes San Francisco Bay, Menlo Park and Palo Alto regions and is a dominant region in the life sciences sector, hosting global organizations and startups alike. 

Industry leaders like Amgen, AbbVie, Nektar Therapeutics, Metagenomi and Santen--the San Francisco Bay and Northern California region is comprised of cutting-edge science and medicine. 

Genetown 

The Boston/Cambridge region is home to some of the nation’s most well-known and prestigious Ivy League universities and laser-sharp research hubs including Harvard University, MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital. It’s no wonder the area also packs power in dynamo life science companies as well, in particular, cell and gene therapy. 

This year, the Genetown Hotbed map includes companies like Takeda, Intellia Therapeutics, Obsidian, Amgen, AbbVie, Moderna, Editas Medicine and Biogen.  

Biotech Beach 

Lovely SoCal is well-known for its sprawling beaches and picture-perfect weather, but the region also boasts some of bioscience’s top organizations.  

San Diego, an oft-mentioned location for life sciences and quality of life alike, with companies Dermavant, Travere Therapeutics, AbbVie, Amgen and Prometheus Biosciences.  

The Biotech Beach hotbed is also home to NextGen gene therapy companies Capsida Biotherapeutics and Capstan Therapeutics.  

BioMidwest 

The nation’s heartland succeeds in combining cutting-edge manufacturing facilities, with strong educational institutions, like the University of Chicago and Northwestern University, often teaming up to create powerful pipelines of talent.  

BioMidwest highlights biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin.

BioCapital 

The BioCapital region of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. is about much more than just the Beltway encircling the nation’s capital city. Beyond the Beltway, life sciences abound.  

Featuring established players like Adaptive Phage Therapeutics, Emergent BioSolutions, there is no shortage of therapeutics and vaccines emanating from this region. The BioCapital is also home to one of America’s most renowned medical schools: Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. 

Other key players include MaxCyte, Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, U.S. Pharmacopeia, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Civica Rx and Altimmune.  

Lone Star Bio 

Known for its place as an oncology innovation center, Texas’ Lone Star Bio Hotbed is home to FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, iBio and Coya Therapeutics, known for its promising ALS candidate. 

Industry, when paired with strong educational institutions like Rice University, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Texas A&M University, offers invaluable networks and collaboration capabilities, including valuable streams of talented employee pools.  

Bio NC 

The Bio NC Hotbed boasts Research Triangle Park, North America’s largest high-technology research and science park, nestled right in North Carolina. Besides being a beautiful place to call home with cultural hubs like Asheville, tucked in the mountains, the region is consistently listed among the nation’s top 10 biopharma hubs.  

Life sciences professionals can choose from more than 730 employers, including Aerie Pharmaceuticals, FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies, Atsena, Precision,  CSL Seqirus, Humacyte and Inceptor Bio.   

Pharm Country 

Pharm Country Hotbed, including Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island is home to huge population centers, like New York City, and is dominated by Ivy League universities.  

Consistently ranked among the top five U.S. life sciences clusters, the region typically attracts a good deal of venture capital dollars, particularly as onlookers seek direction from Wall Street. The region is home to Regeneron, Amgen, AbbVie, Daiichi Sankyo, CSL Behring, Exelixis and Century Therapeutics.  

BioForest 

Home to gorgeous cities and desirable cultural spots, the Pacific Northwest BioForest Hotbed is comprised of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies in Oregon and Washington.  

Companies calling this region home include Lundbeck, Sana Biotechnology, Visus Therapeutics, Chinook Therapeutics and Umoja Biopharma.
